Two brothers charged in connection with the killing of Toyosi Shitta-Bey (15) in Dublin on Good Friday have had the charges against them increased to murder.
Toyosi Shitta-Bey, of The Boulevard, Mount Eustace, Tyrrelstown, who was a third-year student at Hartstown Community School, was on his way back from the National Aquatic Centre with friends on the night of April 2nd when he was stabbed.
Paul Barry (39) from Pearse House on Dublin’s Pearse Street had previously been charged with the manslaughter of the teenager at Mount Eustace Crescent, Tyrrelstown.
Michael Barry (24) from Pigeon House Road, Ringsend had previously been charged under Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act with possession of a hockey stick.
At a sitting of Blanchardstown District Court today, the charge of manslaughter against Paul Barry was struck out and replaced with one of murder.
Michael Barry was also charged with murder in addition to the previous charge.
Det Gda Tom Cooney told the court that Paul Barry made no reply when charged with murder.
Det Gda Karl Smyth said Michael Barry replied "absolute rubbish" when charged.
Judge Brian Sheridan remanded the two men in custody for one week until September 28th.
Applications for free legal aid for both men were granted.
The hearing was attended by Toyosi’s mother, Bola and a small number of members of the organisation, Residents Against Racism. Her husband Segun waited outside with two of their children.
