At least two people have been killed and six more wounded in a suicide car bomb attack on a police checkpoint in Baghdad this morning.
Police said the six wounded in the attack near the Iranian embassy included three civilians and three policemen.
At least 23 Iraqis were killed in weekend attacks, including four young children in an attack on a policeman's home northeast of Baghdad last night.
The attack on the policeman's home occurred in Balad Ruz, 45 miles northeast of Baghdad. The officer's four children, ages 6 to 11, and his brother were killed; the officer was unharmed, but his wife was wounded.
Sunni-led insurgents often target police as part of their campaign to try to undermine support for the US-backed government.
Four policemen were killed and nine were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near their patrol in the city of Baqouba yesterday, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad.
The bodies of 23 men were found partially buried near Dujail, about 50 miles north of Baghdad. They had been abducted last week while travelling from Baghdad to their homes in Samarra after failing to be accepted at a police recruit centre.
Elsewhere, the bodies of prominent Sunni Arab tribal leader and his son were found in a field near Hawija, 150 miles north of Baghdad, police said.
