Two men have died in accidents, bringing the number of people killed on the State's roads to 144 yesterday, 10 more than for the same period last year.

In Cavan a man was killed and two others injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling crashed into a wall early yesterday.

The accident happened at about 12.30am at Rahardrum, Virginia, Co Cavan. The injured were taken to Cavan and Navan hospitals. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Gardaí in Clones are investigating a road accident in which Darren Lawlor (23), Cortolvin Road, Monaghan, died when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car. The crash occurred at Callohill, Scotshouse, near Clones, Co Monaghan at about 7.25pm on Thursday.

Man charged over driving death

A Kilrush man has appeared at Ennis District Court charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Gary Cotter (20) in April last year.

Mark O'Gorman (21), Woodfield Drive, Kilrush, was charged in connection with the offence at Moyasta, Kilrush, on April 11th, 2004.

Judge Terence Finn remanded Mr O'Gorman on €3,000 bail to appear before Kilkee District Court on June 28th.

Man sentenced for stabbing attack

A Derry man has been sentenced to 3½ years in detention in a young offenders centre for an attack on two men last year. Judge Melody McReynolds said the stab wound on one of the men had severed nerves in his temple causing disfigurement and disablement.

Conor Lishman (17), from the Creggan, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Gary Curran (36) and assaulting Raymond Curran (34). He further admitted possessing a knife. Judge McReynolds also ordered Lishman to undergo 18 months probation supervision upon his release.

Loyalist awaiting trial released

A senior loyalist facing a murder trial was yesterday freed on bail with orders to stay within five miles of a police station. William Courtney (41), an alleged Ulster Defence Association leader in Belfast, was also told to hand over £11,000 in cash and stay away from the victim's family.

Courtney is accused of murdering Alan McCullough (21), a former associate of deposed UDA chief Johnny Adair, in May 2003.

Courtney's trial has been dogged by delays. With no new date fixed, he was released from custody at Belfast Crown Court provided he adhered to strict bail restrictions.

Man in court on firearms charges

A father of three has appeared before Limerick District Court in connection with firearms offences. Terence Price (19), Altamira Court, Thomondgate, was charged with possession of a sawn-off shotgun with intent to endanger life at Crossroads, Thomondgate, on May 17th.

Judge Tom O'Donnell remanded him in custody to appear again before Limerick District Court on May 26th next.
