Two people were killed and 40 others were injured when a storm hit an open-air music festival in Belgium today.

Video from the site of Pukkelpop near the town of Hasselt, about 80km east of Brussels, showed stage equipment dangling in high winds as rain-soaked concertgoers ran for cover.

Le Soir newspaper quoted a witness saying that the sky got dark and winds picked up violently as hailstones pelted those gathered there.

It said one person had died and several others were injured.

An initial report in another newspaper, The DH daily, said four people had died.

It was not immediately possible to reconcile these claims and the authorities could not be reached for comment.

The festival's website lists a number of stages where performances were to be held during the three-day event, which started today.

Some 60,000 people are attending the event at which Foo Fighters, Eminem and Kasabian are among the acts scheduled to perform.

Last week five people died at a concert in Indiana in the US after strong winds caused the collapse of a stage.
