Gardaí in Co Tipperary were last night continuing to question a man and a woman arrested in connection with a shooting incident in Clonmel in which a man in his 30s suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

Supt Chris Delaney of Clonmel Garda station confirmed that the man and woman - who are also in their 30s - were arrested at separate locations in the town early yesterday morning for questioning about the shooting.

Both the man and the woman were arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act which allows gardaí to detain suspects for up to 48 hours.

Gardaí were alerted to the shooting when a member of the public raised the alarm after hearing a gun being discharged near the Gashouse Bridge on the Old Waterford Road in the town at about 12.10am yesterday.
