Two held over Longford death

Two people were being questioned by detectives today after a man in his 50s died following an incident in Longford town.

Two people were being questioned by detectives today after a man in his 50s died following an incident in Longford town.

The man  were walking on Park Road at about 9.45pm last night when he was assaulted.

It is understood the dead man may have suffered blows to the head. He was treated at the scene for his injuries but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A woman and a man in their early 20s were arrested and are being held in Longford Garda station under Section Fuor of the Criminal Justice Act.

A postmortem examination is expected to be carried out later today at Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

The scene remains preserved pending a technical examination and gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
