Gardaí have arrested a man and a woman in connection with a so-called tiger-kidnapping raid on a post office in Limerick last week.

A 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were arrested in Gort, Co Galway, this afternoon, a Garda spokesman said.

They have been taken to Henry Street and Roxboro Road Garda stations in Limerick. The man is detained under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007, and the woman is being held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.

Shortly after 8.30am last Tuesday, a post office worker was abducted and a sum of money was stolen from a post office branch in Newcastle West.

The victim was confronted by an armed and masked man at the rear of the premises and forced to leave the scene.

Some time later a female member of staff was contacted and directed to take an undisclosed sum of money to a wooded area between Carraig Kerry and Athea - which she did between 11am and 12pm.

At 4pm the abducted man was discovered in the boot of his black 09-LK-registered BMW in the Templegreen housing estate in Newcastle West.
