Two people were injured when a fire broke out in a kitchen area of Tallaght hospital in Dublin earlier today.

A spokeswoman for Dublin Fire Brigade said seven units had attended the blaze, which has now been extinguished. The fire brigade received reports of the fire at about 11.40am.

Ambulances were diverted to other hospitals as a precaution and outpatient appointments were deferred.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire in the kitchen area and no patients or hospital employees were hurt.

Two contractors on the premises were injured and taken to the emergency department for treatment. Both are in a stable condition and their injuries are not thought to be serious.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are not known.

Services resumed, but a hospital spokeswoman said some planned elective procedures had to be deferred.

"Patients affected will be contacted directly by the hospital," she said. Provision has also been made for patients' meals.
