The two Cork men killed when a stolen car crashed in the city suburbs were named yesterday as Mr Christopher Kearney (18), of Hillcrest Drive, Blarney Road, and Mr Ian Ward (20), of Harbour View Road, Knocknaheeney.

The two, the driver and a passenger, died when the car went out of control and struck a pole on the Carrigrohane Road just before midnight on Monday. According to Garda sources, the car had been stolen earlier from Dominic Street.

Another passenger in the car was uninjured.

The Fine Gael TD, Mr Bernard Allen, accused the Government of ignoring the "joyriding" problem and said it had failed to provide adequate sporting facilities to keep young people occupied. Mr Billy Kelleher, a Fianna Fail TD, said the addiction to joyriding appeared to be as powerful as alcohol or drug abuse.
