Two men have appealed to the Court of Criminal Appeal against their convictions and life sentences for the murder of a Limerick barman who died after he was brutally assaulted during an attempt to rob him of the pub takings.

Raymond Casey of Ashe Avenue, John Carew Park, Limerick, and Anthony Casey, of Mount Pleasant Avenue, Limerick, had pleaded not guilty to the murder of Noel Pyper (48) during their trial before the Central Criminal Court. Both men were sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted in January 2002.

The CCA yesterday refused an application to adduce new evidence in the matter on behalf of Raymond Casey. The new evidence constituted an affidavit by Anthony Casey but the court ruled it out after stating it was a further attempt by Anthony Casey to give another different version of events.

The appeal continues tomorrow.
