GardaI believe they have made a significant breakthrough in their efforts to apprehend a gang of travelling criminals who have carried out a series of burglaries in the west over the past year.

Two men, arrested in Letterkenny and Cork city on Monday under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, appeared at Ballycastle Court, Co Mayo yesterday charged with involvement in 12 break-ins to shops and public houses.

Mr Michael Foley, Victoria Terrace, St Lukes, Cork and Mr John Foley, Lower Main St, Letterkenny, were remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear at Castlebar District Court on December 1st. Gardai are following a particular line of inquiry in relation to 20 other burglaries in the area.
