Two men were being treated in hospital in Belfast early this morning after being beaten by a gang of up to 15 men.

The RUC said the men were in a flat at Alliance Avenue in the north of the city when between 10 and 15 men burst in and set about them with baseball bats in what appeared to be a paramilitary-style beating. The victims were later taken to the Mater Hospital suffering from head injuries which were not believed to be serious.

A short time earlier the RUC had appealed for information about another beating - also believed to have been carried out by paramilitaries - after the condition of the victim worsened.

The 42-year-old man was beaten in an attack in the Skegoniel area of the city nearly a fortnight ago.
