Two men were yesterday charged in connection with a break-in at the home of a 51-year- old priest who was struck on the head with a hammer during a robbery at his home in Cork city over the Christmas season.
Mr William Nolan (19), and Mr Stephen Casey (18), were both charged with aggravated burglary at Arderrin Way, the Glen in Cork, the home of local curate, Father Jerry Cremin, on December 31st, 2004.
Det Garda Tom McCarthy and Det Garda Mike Hogan both gave evidence of arresting and charging both men with the offence. Neither man made any reply after caution, Cork District Court was told.
Insp Con Cadogan said gardaí were objecting to bail in the case of Mr Nolan while they were seeking a substantial independent surety and a number of conditions to bail for Mr Casey.
Judge Uinsinn MacGruairc remanded Mr Nolan from Comeragh Park, the Glen in Cork in custody to appear again at Cork District Court on February 1st, for directions from the DPP. He remanded Mr Casey from Comeragh Park, the Glen in Cork in custody with consent to bail of €500 and an independent surety of €10,000 also to appear at Cork District Court on February 1st.
He also imposed a number of bail conditions on Mr Casey including that he reside at Comeragh Park, the Glen, that he has no contact with Father Cremin.
He also made it a condition of bail that he sign on daily at Mayfield Garda Station he also imposed a curfew that he remain indoors between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.
