Two people thrown from funfair ride in Dublin

A safety inspector certified the west Dublin funfair ride in which two people were seriously injured earlier this week.

A 28-year-old woman yesterday remained in stable condition with serious leg injuries in Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, while a 13-year-old girl has been released from Temple Street hospital after they were thrown from the "superbowl" ride.

The ride had been checked two weeks before the "Scream funfest" opened on September 6th at Blanchardstown, Fingal County Council confirmed yesterday.

The council is in charge of inspecting and approving safety certificates for all amusement rides operated on their lands.

The incident happened at 8.15pm as the funfair was in the last hours of a 12-day run at Blanchardstown, in west Dublin.

The two injured riders were aboard the superbowl - a giant rotating disc with individually spinning capsules for passengers - when they appeared to fall from the ride.

The superbowl was immediately shut down as on-site paramedics treated the injured pair.

A spokeswoman for the council said the ride had been thoroughly investigated before the accident.

"As part of the operating permission, Funfest is required to provide valid safety certification for all equipment prior to setting up the fairground," she said.

"The council is satisfied that the safety certificate for the equipment in question is valid."

She added: "An inspector authorised by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government checked all structural, electrical and mechanical equipment, and the site layout, before the funfair opened to the public."

She said that the superbowl would remain at the site until it had been examined by gardaí and safety inspectors. Gardaí remained on site until yesterday afternoon, when the remaining equipment was being dismantled and loaded on to lorries.

The fair was operated by a firm called Funfest, which had been operating annual fairs at the site since 2004, when they were granted a tender from the council. Witnesses to the incident are urged to call Blanchardstown Garda station at 01-6667000.
