Two people were killed and 37 injured in a series of blasts in Russia's rebel Chechnya region, an official said.

Ms Nadezhda Pogosova, senior aide to Chechnya's prosecutor, told NTV television from Chechnya bombs exploded in three cars parked near a courthouse and police station in the rebel region's second city Gudermes.

Preliminary figures listed two people killed and 37 hurt and most of the victims were civilians, she said.

But the interior ministry in Moscow said 16 Chechen police were hurt.

Gudermes is the seat of the pro-Russian Chechen administration which Moscow installed after retaking control of the area last year. Russia had withdrawn its troops after a 1994-'96 war with Chechen separatists.
