It was all sweetness between the runners, and bold prediction of two seats in the capital, when the Labour Party officially marked in Dublin its European election campaign launch at a sun-filled Newman House yesterday.

"Opinion polls show," declared the party president, Mr Proinsias De Rossa, "there is an outstanding possibility of two Labour seats in Dublin", one for himself and a second for the present incumbent, Ms Bernie Malone.

Ms Malone made no mention of two seats in Dublin but appealed to the city's voters with talk of "20p bus fares, many more buses and a Luas delivered on time and on both sides of the Liffey".
