Two teenagers were killed by a train today near Darlington, northern England, British Transport Police said.

The 15-year-old boys were struck at about 8:45 p.m. by a train travelling between Manchester and Newcastle.

The accident triggered the closure of the main East Coast railway line until 10:15pm causing severe disruption to passengers travelling over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Police refused to speculate on media reports the two youths had been part of a bigger group of teenagers playing "chicken" on the line.
