Two teenaged girls have been killed in a crash in Co Antrim that left their two male companions in a critical condition in hospital.

The single vehicle accident happened close to Toombridge at 12.45 a.m. The van they were travelling in struck a gatepost and then collided with a tree on the Carlane Road near Toome just after midnight.

The names of the deceased, aged 15 and 16-years of age have not yet been released.

Their deaths brings to 18 the number of people killed on the roads in northern Ireland since the start of the year.
