Two women have died in a car crash in Co Tipperary.

Two women have died in a car crash in Co Tipperary.

The four-vehicle collision occurred shortly after 6pm yesterday evening on the N7 at Ballinakill, Roscrea, a Garda statement said.

The two who died were both aged 58 and both were Pakistani nationals.

"They were rear seat passengers in the car in which they were travelling and both were taken to Nenagh General Hospital from the scene of the collision," the Garda said.

"One of then died in Nenagh and the other was transferred to Limerick Regional Hospital where she died this morning."

Six other people were taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Gardaí at Roscrea are seeking witnesses to the collision. Superintendent Chris Delaney, who is leading the inquiry said: "The gardaí are confident that there would have been a large number of people on the road at the time of the accident."

He said any information would be treated in the strictest confidence.

Post mortem examinations are underway today on the remains of the two women who died.

A man killed in a crash in Cashel yesterday has been named by gardaí as William Murphy (43) of Aston Village, Drogheda, Co Louth.

The two deaths today bring to 290 the number of people who have died on the State's roads so far this year compared to 324 dead at the same date last year.
