A substantial sum of money, thought to be in the region of €250,000, was stolen during an armed robbery in the grounds of University College Dublin this afternoon.
Security staff were delivering the money from a cash transit van at 2.45 p.m. when they were approached by two raiders carrying sawn off shotguns.
Gardaí said one of the raiders escaped on a high-powered silver motorbike. The bike had a 2000 Dublin registration plate. They believe the second raider escaped in a blue Volkswagen Golf which was found abandoned in a pub car park in Clonskeagh.
The raiders both wore balaclavas one wore a beige jacket the other wore dark clothing.
No shots were fired and no one was injured.
While the exact sum remains unclear, a Garda source told ireland.comit is thought the amount may be as much as €250,000.
Gardaí in Donnybrook are investigating.
