Celtic 1 Valencia 0
(Agg 1-1: Valencia win 5-4 on pens)
Spanish giants Valencia beat Celtic 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out at Parkhead tonight to book their place in the fourth round of the UEFA Cup.
Santiago Canizares was Valencia's hero after making vital penalty saves as the beaten Champions League finalists of the last two seasons kept their European interest alive this season.
Rob Douglas saved twice for Celtic in the shoot-out but yet again the Scottish champions saw a European campaign end before Christmas.
Celtic's Paul Lambert and Alan Thompson scored early in the shoot-out and Valencia's Norwegian forward John Carew also netted.
Then Valencia saw Rodriguez Vicente's spot kick saved by Douglas before Celtic's regular penalty taker Henrik Larsson, who had earlier levelled the aggregate scores, blasted his effort over the bar.
De los Santos brought the scores back on level terms before Celtic's Stilian Petrov fired wide.
Juan Sanchez put Valencia in front before Chris Sutton equalised.
Fabian Ayala's penalty was then well saved by Scotland international Douglas to take the match to sudden death.
Celtic's Wales striker John Hartson fired into the roof of the net and Mauricio Pellegrino also scored, but Joos Valgaeren saw Canizares save at the second attempt before substitute Ferrer Mista scored to seal victory for Valencia.
Celtic, 1-0 down after the first leg in Spain, levelled the tie on the stroke of half-time courtesy of Sweden striker Larsson.
But neither side could add to their goal tally during the second half and in extra time.
