UEFA are to investigate crowd trouble that marred the Republic of Ireland's 2-1 win over Georgia in Tbilisi yesterday.

UEFA are to investigate crowd trouble that marred the Republic of Ireland's 2-1 win over Georgia in Tbilisi yesterday.

The body made special mention of an incident when Kevin Kilbane was hit on the arm by a penknife thrown from the crowd.

"UEFA will open a disciplinary investigation into events at the match between Georgia and the Republic of Ireland," said UEFA communications and public affairs director Mike Lee in a statement published on the UEFA website.

"We have already examined the referees' report, which does refer in particular to an incident involving a penknife. UEFA will refer this matter to our disciplinary body for further action to be considered."

Damien Duff was also struck on the head during the match by a plastic drinks bottle and Gary Breen hit by a ball bearing.
