A large section of the M40 in Britain is closed today as detectives search for clues into the murder of a biker shot dead yesterday on the southbound carriageway.

The man, aged in his 30s, was killed between junctions 13 and 12 near Leamington Spa in Warwickshire while travelling with some friends on Sunday afternoon.

"The evidence would probably tend to suggest that [he was shot] although I am reluctant to confirm anything until we have got the result of the postmortem later on today," Det Supt Ken Lawrence.

Police said the victim was from the south of England while his two companions were thought to be Polish.

Detectives said they wanted to find witnesses who saw a green Rover 620 travelling south on the motorway close to the group of motorcyclists at the time of the incident.

Det Supt Lawrence said the dead man was thought to have been to the Bulldog Bash, an annual event for bikers held nearby that attracts people from around the world.

He added that there were similarities between the murder and a shooting six years ago near the biker event but said it was too early to confirm any links.
