British police arrested a woman today in connection with the death of Italian Roberto Calvi - known as "God's banker" - who was found hanging from London'sBlackfriars Bridge in 1982.

A City of Police spokeswoman told reporters the 42-year-oldwas arrested on suspicion of perjury and conspiring to pervertthe course of justice.

The arrest was the first by British police since theyreopened Calvi's case in September.

Calvi, who earned his soubriquet because of his close tiesto the Vatican, was found dangling from scaffolding under thebridge on June 18th, 1982, with bricks in his pockets and $15,000on his person.

A British coroner initially ruled his death a suicide, but asecond coroner recorded an open verdict.

Italian police said this year they believed he was murderedby the Mafia, and charged four people with the crime. Thatprompted British detectives to reopen the case.
