UK retail sales growth slowed further last month as consumer caution continued to hit the high street, official figures showed today.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said sales volumes rose by 0.3 per cent month-on-month in April, compared with the upwardly revised 0.5 per cent seen in March.
Excluding fuel, the growth was even lower at 0.1 per cent as shoppers held back spending amid fears of government belt-tightening and tax rises.
