A British woman has married a US death row prisoner after wooing him with her poetry.

Tracy Morgan from Nottinghamshire began her courtship of James Morgan four-and-a-half years ago. She visited him in prison in Raleigh, North Carolina, five times before moving to Raleigh.

Morgan (52) was convicted of the November 1997 stabbing death of Patrina Lynette King (34).

Mrs Morgan (44) said they talked about the crime and it was no longer a concern to her once she "found out all the details".

The North Carolina Department of Correction said Morgan is one of only two people to get married at Central Prison in the past five years. He is the only one on death row.

While prison officials allowed the couple to hold hands, hug and kiss during the wedding ceremony, their visits from now on will last about one-and-a-half hours a week through a glass partition.

Mrs Morgan said the relationship began after she sent poetry to Morgan in prison. "It was called, 'Where Is My Beloved?'. "When he wrote back, he was so touched by it, and he said, 'Nobody's ever called me beloved before'."

Mrs Morgan, who plans to stay in Raleigh with her 15-year-old son, said she is optimistic that one day she and her husband will be together outside prison walls.
