Honorary degrees will be conferred on the former president of the European Parliament Pat Cox and the late art historian John Hunt at the University of Limerick next week.
Mr Cox, who became president of the European Parliament in 2002, had previously served Munster as an independent MEP for more than a decade.
A posthumous honorary degree will be conferred on Mr Hunt, a founding director of the Hunt Museum.
Mr Hunt, who had been awarded the freedom of Limerick city, died last August at the age of 47. His widow Patricia will accept the degree on behalf of her husband.
It is being conferred in recognition of his contribution to the contemporary arts and for his role in spearheading the establishment of the museum.
The Hunt Collection, with an estimated value of €70 million, is one of the world's largest private collections of art and artefacts.
Two other people with strong Limerick connections will also receive honorary degrees at the ceremony at the university on April 14th.
A senior partner with the firm of Limerick solicitors Holmes, O'Malley, Sexton, Gordon Holmes, and John Ryan, chief executive of US-based computer firm the Macrovision Corporation, are both members of the board of the University of Limerick Foundation.
Mr Ryan, from Co Tipperary, is a former winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year award in Silicon Valley in California.
