There have been calls on the Government to provide compensation for women who survived Magdalene laundries and for a statutory inquiry into the abuses that took place in them.
The Irish Human Rights Commission has requested that the UN Human Rights Council call on the Government to address the issue of reparation for survivors of the Magdalene laundries.
The Women’s Human Rights Alliance has asked the UN body to urge the Government to comply with recommendations of the UN Committee against Torture.
It also wants the human rights commission to institute a statutory inquiry into abuse in the laundries as well as a compensation scheme for survivors.
Last October 127 recommendations were made by UN member states to Ireland to strengthen its human rights protections.
