BURMA: The European Parliament last night demanded that the UN Security Council put human rights violations in Burma at the top of its agenda.

The architect of the resolution, Munster MEP Simon Coveney, has just returned from a week-long visit to the region between Burma and northeastern Thailand where over 100,000 Burmese people are in refugee camps. Hundreds of thousands more have poured into Thailand and live there as undocumented migrants.

Mr Coveney, who is rapporteur on human rights for the parliament, says the issue is "solvable without recourse to military intervention and therefore one which should be at the top of the world's agenda".
