Ulster Unionists have selected Mr David McNarry as the party's candidate for the Strangford constituency in the British general election.

Mr McNarry, a local councillor, was chosen at a selection meeting in Newtownards in Co Down.

Mr John Taylor, the party's deputy leader, announced in January he would stand down from fighting the seat he held in Westminister for 17 years.

Mr McNarry is said to be broadly in favour of the Belfast Agreement. After his selection said that he represented the positive face of unionism.
