Up to 30 people were injured when two regional trains collided head-on close to Interlaken in the central Swiss Bernese Alps region today.

A spokesman for the Swiss air ambulance service said one person had been flown to hospital with severe injuries after the crash while another 20 to 30 suffered light injuries in the collision on a popular tourist route.

The crash occurred at about 8 a.m. (Irish time) near the village of Gsteigwiler, some four kilometres south of the resort of Interlaken, a police spokesman said.

The trains collided on a single track popular with tourists travelling to the Jungfrau and Eiger peaks.
