A new geological map of the island of Ireland was published today.

The map is an update of earlier maps that were first published in 1928 and was unveiled by Minister for Natural Resources Noel Dempsey and his Northern counterpart, Maria Eagle.

Mr Dempsey said that the map "represents the most modern and detailed summary of the geology of the island," adding that that the benefits of geological mapping could be up to 20 times the original cost of producing the map.

The map incorporates information extracted from more detailed maps and is expected to serve the needs of consulting engineers, planners, local authorities, as well as exploration and waste water companies.

Ms Eagle said the map will be "especially useful" in identifying potential sites for geothermal renewable energy and areas suitable for gas storage.

The bedrock geological map was produced by the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) and the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland.

The maps are available at a cost of €10 from GSI or from a range of bookshops throughout the country.
