An aircraft travelling from London to New York made an emergency landing at Shannon airport yesterday after experiencing technical difficulties.

The American Airlines plane was flying from Heathrow airport to JFK airport when an electrical problem was discovered in the cockpit.

Flight 105 had left London at 12.23pm and was just 120 minutes into its seven-hour journey when it was forced to turn around and head for Shannon. The plane landed safely with 190 passengers and crew at 3.27pm.

A replacement aircraft was expected in Shannon to take the passengers on to New York.

Bus crash injures woman at stop

A woman was injured in Dublin when a tour bus crashed into a bus stop in the city centre yesterday.

The Dublin Bus tour bus collided with a bus shelter on Cathal Brugha Street at 2.30pm. It collapsed and hit a woman who was waiting at the stop. She was taken to the Mater hospital and treated for minor injuries. The driver was also taken to hospital, suffering from shock. There were no passengers on the bus.

Rural post offices computerised

A scheme to computerise 10 rural post offices was announced by An Post yesterday. The pilot scheme will allow customers to avail of post office services including AIB banking, BillPay, phone top-ups and savings bank facilities.

The installation of computers will be complete by late summer. The 10 offices to participate are: Ballyforan, Co Roscommon; Newcastle, Co Tipperary; Crinkle, Co Offaly; Goleen, Co Cork; Kilmeena, Co Mayo; Kilmogany, Co Kilkenny; Three Mile House, Co Monaghan; Ballygawley, Co Sligo; Meenaneary, Co Donegal and Carrickboy, Co Longford.
