Oslo - The United States requested a 24-hour postponement yesterday at the Oslo conference seeking to outlaw landmines, in a last-ditch bid to persuade 100 countries to accept a compromise it has proposed for a global ban treaty. There were no objections to the delay.
Washington reversed opposition to the treaty at the weekend, but laid down a three-point compromise it said it would need before agreeing to sign a final convention, scheduled for Ottawa in December.
