Three crew members were killed when a US military Black Hawk helicopter crashed in a wooded area in southwestern Germany, a US army spokesman said today.
"We are calling it an accident at the moment, pending investigation," said the spokesman for US Army Europe in Heidelberg, declining to give further details.
The UH-60 Black Hawk crashed at about 6pm local time yesterday near a motorway junction between Viernheim and Lorsch, near Heidelberg.
The spokesman could not confirm local media reports that the helicopter went up in flames on hitting the ground. Some 42,000 US military personnel are based in Europe and US Army Europe has its headquarters in Heidelberg.
