Five Syrians were killed and another 10 hurt when a missile struck a bus in western Iraq as it was returning to neighbouring Syria yesterday morning, the official Syrian news agency reported.

The official SANA news agency said the wounded were taken to a Syrian hospital on the border, while the dead were sent to a hospital on the outskirts of the Syrian capital Damascus.

A spokeswoman for the US Central Command said Allied forces do not target civilians and that their targeting is done carefully to select military targets.

Syria, which strongly opposes the US-led war in Iraq, has repeatedly called for a peaceful solution to the crisis.
