Buenos Aires - The United States yesterday signed the agreement reached last year in Japan to fight global warming and said the move showed its commitment to stemming industrial pollution blamed for heating the planet.
But US ratification of the Kyoto accord and action to implement it appeared some way off. The Clinton administration, facing stiff opposition to the treaty from the Republican-led Congress, was among the last of the governments of rich industrial nations to sign the treaty accord calling for sharp cuts in emissions of waste gases. The treaty must first be ratified by the US Senate, which is not expected to vote on it for at least two years.
