Internet purchases in 1999 more than doubled to $17.3 billion from $7.7 billion in 1998, it said in a report.

By sector, air transport, personal computers and book sales profited most from online activity in 1999, said Lars Johanson, chief editor of the 2000 book of US statistics on which the commerce department based its report.

The publication also showed the proportion of US schools plugged into the Internet growing from 50 per cent in 1995 to 95 per cent in 1999. Computers and the Internet were used in class by two out of three public school teachers in 1999.
