A Formerly unnamed street in Oakland, California, now bears the moniker Gerry Adams Way, after a unanimous vote of the Oakland City Council this week, writes Hara Marks.
Ms Nancy Nadel introduced the resolution to name the street on behalf of her constituent, Mr Ciaran Scally, who owns an electrical business in the tiny thoroughfare.
"Mr Scally proposed to me that we name the street after Gerry Adams, and we were happy to comply," Ms Nadel said.
"The council supported the proposal because of Gerry Adams's contribution to the peace process. There was no opposition."
Gerry Adams Way intersects with Martin Luther King Jr Way, a major Oakland street. Besides the new street honouring Mr Adams, the only other street in Oakland named after a living person is Nelson Mandela Parkway.
