A US Air Force C-17 Globemaster transport plane landed safely in Baghdad todayafter apparently being hit by a surface-to-air missile.
The giant plane suffered an engine explosion shortly after taking off fromBaghdad International Airport, said a senior Pentagon official.
One of the 16 passengers and crew members on board was slightly injured, saidAir Force Captain Carrie Clear. The aircraft returned to the airport and landedsafely, she added.
A senior Pentagon official described the explosion as a direct hit by a SAMmissile, "like the DHL" incident that damaged a cargo plane departing theairport last month. That plane, too, returned to land safely.
