A son of a prominent renegade Afghan commander and nine fighters have been killed in a clash with US and Afghan government forces in eastern Afghanistan, according to a press agency report.

The eldest son of Pashtun commander Padshah Khan Zadran and nine other rebels were killed in a four-hour battle with US forces on Sunday, the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) said, quoting the warlord's spokesman.

AIP said the fighting took place in Utmaney village after US forces began an operation from the town of Gardez in eastern Paktia province, which borders Pakistan.

It is the first reported clash between the Afghan warlord and US troops.
