A once-hapless USA Rugby Sevens team produced an upset in Wellington New Zealand today by beating favourites Fiji in an opening pool game of the International Sevens Tournament.
Fiji led 10-0 at half time but faced an inspired second-half US team who scored two tries to win 12-10.
Fiji, the winners of the tournament last year, were fielding a young team of mainly new players who came up against an American side that scored no points in last year’s world series.
The game was not attended by any New Zealand cabinet ministers who, acting on advice from Foreign Minister Phil Goff, are boycotting games played by Fiji in response to the coup that took place there last year. AFP
