Vatican City - The Vatican said yesterday it was closing the case of a Swiss Guard who shot dead his commandant and his wife in a Vatican City apartment last year and then killed himself. A Vatican statement said an investigating magistrate had accepted the recommendation of a judge that the case be closed because there was no reason to suspect any other person was involved.

Cedric Tornay (23), a vice-corporal in the tiny force that protects the Pope, shot the newly appointed guard chief, Alois Estermann, and his wife in what the Vatican described as "a fit of madness" on May 4th because he had been passed over for a military decoration. He then turned the gun on himself.
