Vermin infestation closes Dublin supermarket

A serious vermin infestation has lead to the closure of a branch of Tesco in Dublin's north inner-city

A serious vermin infestation has lead to the closure of a branch of Tesco in Dublin's north inner-city. The supermarket, on Prussia St, was issued with a closure order under the Food Safety Authority Act yesterday evening following an inspection by Food Safety officials.

The store is part of the busy Park Shopping Centre in the densely populated, and increasingly chic, area of Stoneybatter.

Infested with mice, there were droppings found "all over the store" as well as dead mice discovered in various states of decay.

The Director of Operations at the Food Safety Authority, Mr Alan Reilly, described conditions as "disgusting" and said they posed a "grave and immediate danger to public health".

A clean-up procedure has been put into effect and will continue until area health officials are satisfied with its results. The premises are being reviewed daily. According to Northern Area Health officials "Tesco are cooperating fully."

The store is expected to reopen within the next few days.
