The parents of a garda who was one of three Irish women seriously injured in a road accident in Australia have flown out to be with their daughter.

Garda Catherine Morrissey (25), from Swords, Co Dublin, who is based at Lucan Garda station, was critically injured when their car was in a head-on collision near the New South Wales coast early on Saturday. She was airlifted to a hospital in Canberra, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Garda Tina Mannion (25) from Moyvannion, Kiltoom in Athlone, who is based at Claremorris Garda station, and another friend, Ms Sheila O'Hara (23), from Possextown, Enfield, Co Meath, are also being treated in hospital. They are not believed to be in a critical condition.

The 53-year-old man driving the other car was killed and his daughter was seriously injured in the collision near Eden, 500 km south of Sydney.
