Arsenal French midfielder Patrick Vieira says he decided against a move from Highbury because he loves the club and believes they can win the league this season.
In an interview in L'Equipetoday, Vieira, Arsenal's newly appointed vice-captain, called the transfer rumours about him earlier this summer a "put-up job".
He dismissed a report that had quoted him as saying the team would not finish higher than fourth or fifth this season and said he was honoured at becoming Tony Adams's deputy.
Asked about the start of the transfer talk, Vieira said: "It was in the spring, and it was more than just rumours. Clubs were coming and talking to my agent and they were big clubs.
"I was made aware of these and talked about it with Arsenal. If I've finally decided to stay, it's because I'm convinced that the club and I can reach new heights together.
"We have what it takes to go very far in the Champions League. We can win the [English] championship," he said.
