Candlelit vigils will be held across the country today to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.
World Suicide Prevention Day is an annual event sponsored by the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation.
The events are organised for the third consecutive year in Ireland by support group Turning the Tide (3Ts).
The vigils will take place after dusk tonight in Dublin, Galway city and Letterkenny, and a similar event is planned for Wexford on Wednesday.
"The vigils are aimed at everybody who has lost family members, friends or work colleagues through suicide. We ask people to gather, light a candle and say a prayer," said a spokeswoman for 3Ts.
In a recent survey by the Irish Association of Suicidology 15 per cent of people said a family member died by suicide.
