The Co Leitrim village of Drumsna will hold a vintage show and family day on Sunday as part of efforts to raise money for the first community centre in the area.
A derelict house close to the centre of the village has been bought and it is hoped eventually to provide a wide range of services at the centre, as well as tourist facilities, activities for the elderly and young people, and night classes.
A lot of money is needed before the Drumsna Development Association can go ahead with the project and applications have been submitted to organisations such as IFI and the EU's peace and reconciliation fund.
Spokesman Mr Noel Duignan said that at the moment community meetings have to be held in the chapel. He said the village has suffered a number of setbacks recently and locals were determined to regenerate the area.
Businesses in the village had suffered since the N4 bypass opened, as people from surrounding areas were inclined to do their shopping in Carrick-on-Shannon rather than leave the main road, he said.
Locals are angry that Bus Eireann has dramatically reduced services in the village.
Up until November there were three buses a day to Dublin and Sligo but this has been reduced to one bus per day.
Mr Duignan said the service was reduced without warning or consultation and that people who relied on the bus to get to appointments in Sligo General Hospital were particularly badly affected.
He said, however, that the community association was determined to build on more positive developments, such as the recent announcement of funding for a sewerage scheme and a growing number of tourists due to an increase in the number of private boats cruising the Shannon.
Sunday's family day, with a display of vintage machinery and children's activities, will take place from 2 p.m., and there will be a bonfire, barbecue and disco starting at 7 p.m.
