Angry confrontations broke out in the West Bank town of Hebron after the funeral of a seven-year-old girl shot dead by Israeli troops.

The girl’s grandmother who suffered a heart attack after the girl's death in Hebron was also buried at the ceremony.

Six people were seriously injured after Israeli troops fired at stone-throwing Palestinians, as tension erupted at the funeral today, Palestinian sources said. Five other were less seriously injured, according to the sources.

Sabrin Abu Snena died in Ahli hospital after being shot in the head during a gun battle between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants yesterday, hospital officials said.

Her 60-year-old grandmother, Ms Wadha Abu Mayela, accompanied her to the hospital. After the girl died, the distraught woman returned home, where she suffered a cardiac arrest and died, hospital sources said.

Before the post-funeral clashes, the town had been quiet as Palestinians launched a general strike in protest against the Israeli occupation of their unofficial headquarters in east Jerusalem.

Stores, businesses, banks and restaurants in Palestinian areas kept their shutters down and doors padlocked in response to calls by Palestinian leaders.
