The Dublin woman jailed for four months in Cyprus has been granted special visiting rights, Michael Jansen reports from Nicosia. Annette Mangan (22) is serving her sentence in the Nicosia Central Prisons for making a false accusation of rape against three Irish soldiers. She has been granted daily visitation rights for her sister, Ms Avril Mangan, and friend, Ms Emer Bermingham. Local prisoners are granted one visit a month but the Cypriot authorities are normally lenient with foreign prisoners.
Yesterday the young women visited Mangan in prison in the company of the Irish honorary consul in Cyprus, Mr Stephanos Stephanou, who arranged the extraordinary schedule of visits with the prison administration.
Early next week the consul intends to apply for a presidential pardon for Mangan.
